What is going to happen, now that the IPv4 address space, administered by IANA, is completely depleted?
In the long run, no more public IPv4 addresses will be handed out. All new address allocations will be IPv6 addresses. The existing IPv4 addresses will stay in use for a long time, though. In other words, we will end up with two co-existing Internets, one with IPv4 addresses and one with IPv6 addresses, sharing a common infrastructure. In order to send and receive data traffic over IPv6 it is up to every organization to make sure that their services and hardware support and is configured for IPv6.
IP-Solutions is a full-service partner within IPv6, supporting customers in their studies and migrations with consulting and training.
What advantages does IPv6 offer?
• Larger address space, making a continuous expansion of the Internet possible
• Globally unique addressing of everything connected to the Internet (private networks are not needed, but still possible)
• Simpler administration of IP addresses
• More efficient handling of traffic flows (increased performance)
• More reliable point-to-point security (IPSEC is mandatory for all IPv6 implementations)
• Easier to add new protocol functions as needs arise (extension headers)
IPv6 Strategy Meeting
An open discussion about how your organization should approach an IPv6 migration. A perfect start when you want to get the project running, giving you useful input on what to focus on and the order in which to go through the different steps. A strategy meeting takes as a starting point your current needs and bases the strategy on your unique IPv6 position. This is an excellent way to approximate the extent of the changes you will need to go through, and which resources you will need during these changes. The strategy meeting can also be performed as a workshop where we interactively work together to formulate your organization’s IPv6 project framework.
IPv6 Studies and Impact Assessments
An IP-Solutions consultant studies the existing infrastructure in order to deliver a report describing, in detail, the IPv6 migration. The report includes which systems need upgrading or replacing, and a concrete project plan. This is a good, secure, way to get the project started, relying on the solid expertise and experience of IP-Solutions. When the report is delivered, you may choose to continue the project on your own, or you may use a consultant to help you. In any case, you have a very good platform, helping you complete the IPv6 migration correctly and on time.
IP-Solutions is a leading provider of IPv6 training for IT managers as well as engineers. Technical training is a good way to raise the IPv6 competence in your organization. We presently offer a number of IPv6 courses – from strategy training, mainly designed for IT management, to pure software development courses, perfect for developers at organizations making hardware that need to support IPv6.
IP-Solutions helps you implement IPv6 in alignment with best current practices. We prefer to see this as a hands-on continuation of an “IPv6 Study and Impact Assessment”, since the implementation is dependent on solid ground work having been done, in order to have a smooth and surprise-free IPv6 migration.
In case you choose to implement IPv6 yourselves, it’s still a good idea to let a third party make sure everything works as planned. IP-Solutions verifies your IPv6 implementation and issues a certificate “IPv6 ready by IP-Solutions” along with graphics you can use on your web page to show others that you are ready for the next generation of the Internet. This is a way to rest easy, knowing that the project has been safely completed, and letting you then focus on your core business instead.
IPv6 guideline – Offer
At IP-Solutions we have co-operated with .SE (the Swedish Internet Infrastructure Foundation) to develop a guide describing how to migrate a corporate network from IPv4 to IPv6.
These guidelines are packaged as a detailed project plan.
