IP Multimedia Subsystem, IMS, is the technology where telecommunication and datacommunication finally meet. IMS can be rougly divided into three areas: access, core network and services.
The access can be a mobile phone or a broadband-connected computer. The core is the brains of the outfit and makes the IP packets find their way to the right destinations. Here you will also find central functions such as charging. The services can be telephony services, IP-TV, message-takers… the sky is the limit.
When the IMS networks are built, different manufacturers can supply different parts of a network. This is possible thanks to all interfaces being standardised, and most of them being based on SIP and IP.
